Secret or Mystery Shopper Scam

March 23rd, 2009 · No Comments

You are looking to make some extra money and you see an ad looking for a mystery shopper or a secret shopper.  When you contact the company about the position, you are told you can earn money by acting as a "mystery” or “secret” shopper purchasing items at different stores or dining at different restaurants and reporting on your experience . The company then sends an employment package.  The package includes forms for reporting on the businesses, a training assignment, and a cashier’s check in an amount between $2,500 and $4,000.  The training assignment is to deposit the  check (lets say $3000) at a check cashing business, pose as a customer, and wire $2500  to an address in or out of the USA (the idea is you keep $500 for expenses and your pay)  Or to deposit the check in your own account and then go to a check cashing store and complete the transaction with one of your own check.  You normally have two days to complete the “assignment”.  The scam is that it can take a bank 5-10 days to realize that the check is fake.  When the check bounces after you wire the money, you liable for the fake check.  This scam is popping up all over the country, don’t be fooled!
