I have been using Glary Utilities on my computers to clean up stray files and the registry.  It made quite a difference on an old lap top running XP.  Its very easy to use.  If you are not very tech savvy just use the 1-Click Maintenance tab, click scan for problems and it will tell you how many problems you have.  Finally click Repair problems and you are done.  Best of all, its free.  You can download Glary Utilities here
